About
“She isn't simply delivering a set; she's responding to the people listening.”
An old sound with a new soul
SAvannah, GA
With soulful vocals and alternate-thumb fingerpicking, Americana singer-songwriter Alia Torres draws on a lifetime of listening.
Her voice moves from deep and raspy to delicate and airy, while her songs have a way of making listeners laugh or cry. There is an almost disarmingly direct quality to her connection with an audience.
Her sound brings together the melodic sophistication and vocal warmth of classic country and jazz-influenced singers with the older country-blues tradition of fingerpicking. Her strumming has a surprisingly rhythmic, soulful character, while her picking is gentler and more traditional—not electric blues or guitar-hero playing.
Her songs carry a gentle philosophical quality without taking themselves too seriously. She can write an upbeat, bluesy song about a crying dog, then turn to the impermanence of love, the courage to embrace the present, or the importance of enjoying life's journey. There is a recurring thread of tenderness throughout her work. Even her saddest songs seem to hold an appreciation for the sweetness of life.
There is something a little out of time about Alia, in the best sense. Her presentation feels organic and uncontrived: vintage dresses, bare feet, fingerpicking with her nails, standing at the microphone and occasionally moving with the music. Onstage, she is attentive to her audience, reading the room and shaping the emotional energy of a performance as it unfolds. She isn't simply delivering a set; she's responding to the people listening.
Alia began as a sound technician, developing a trained ear for frequencies and sound before stepping into the role of performer. She learned guitar from fellow musicians at The Loft in Colmbus Ga, and developed her vocal style by sitting in with jazz players and singing standards.
Her musical influences span jazz, blues, traditional country, and folk, though she isn't necessarily trying to recreate any one of those genres. Instead, those traditions seem to have settled into a sound that is distinctly her own.
Ultimately, Alia wants listeners to find their own experiences in her songs rather than being told what to think or feel. She is drawn to intimate performance spaces and values the genuine connection that can develop between a performer and an audience. Take a seat, settle in. Come for the music, and stay for the feeling.
